who are we?

Hi, I'm Hayley (pictured with Ducky). I've been doing pottery on and off for 5 years. Having spend the better part of the last 5 years hoping around BC's coast, I've found it varying degrees of difficult (but mostly very difficult) to find a community space work in. After years of lugging my wheel around and setting up shop in sheds, basements (see last years' laundry room studio pictured), and barns, I've opened Duck Clay House. I'm no ceramics expert, I couldn't perfectly center if my life depended on it, I've never run a studio, but I have the space and the desire to share it with my community! I'm offering beginner lessons for those just starting out, or quick lessons for those wanting a simple skills upgrade, but ultimately my goal is to create a community of people who are learning through experimentation and teaching each other. At the end of the day, we're just making cups out of mud, lets have some fun.

Studio Offerings

community Studio Access / Open Studio

Ideal for those with some ceramics knowledge to have a space to create. Includes access to space, wheels, tools, and some glazes. Clay and firing are not factored into the price, but will be discussed and charged depending on how many pieces member need glazed / fired. Bookable times are flexible, and I might be co-working in the space, depending on the time day. See calendar at bottom of site to book.

1 time drop in - $20 per 1.5h session

10 punch pass - $150 - sessions up to 2 hours long available

One lesson / Refresher - $40 / 1h Session

Monthly Pass - $65 (those hoping to use the studio for production will discuss a different rate).

Good for folks who have some ceramics experience but feel a little rusty on the wheel, or novice potters who are looking to up their throwing size. - I may ask those who have very limited experience behind them to do this to get more experience and a feel for the way this studio runs.

True Beginner Package - $280 / 4 weeks

- 1 weekly 1.5 hour lesson, flexible times.

- 1 box of M340 or M340S

- 2 hours per week of open studio / practice time

- Firing & Glazing Included

- PWYC / Sliding Scale options available.

- Kiln firing available for work created in the studio - rates to be discussed.

Other stuff

- M340 / M340S / Coffee for sale, prices vary. Bring your own clay as long as its cone 6.

- Very limited glazes available - please supply your own or you can use mine for a small fee - the studio is new, I will be working on making some bigger glaze batches soon!

- There are two wheels in the space so friends / family can book sessions together!

Book Open Studio Time

Booking Guidelines:

1. This calendar has different options for session duration of 1 hour, 1.5 hours, and 2 hours. 1.5 hour sessions are for 10 punch pass holders, and longer sessions are for monthly pass holders. Monthly pass holders may also book longer sessions by selection a 1 + 2 hour session if they confirm with me first.

2. There is only one time slot available per hour per day to make sure I always have access to my wheel when I need it, however there are two wheels in the space, and if you'd like to work with a friend or family member, that can easily be arranged, shoot me a message!

3. The studio is accessible beyond my working hours to make it flexible for as many as I can! There is a locked key box at the door with the key to the deadbolt - I will message you the code (which will change frequently).

4. You MUST have a studio orientation in person with Hayley before using the studio on your own (this is where you will also pay). If this is your first time doing pottery, you cannot sign up for open studio, and must sign up for a minimum of 2 private lessons before using the space alone.
